  1. The Employee Free Choice Act does not abolish elections or "secret ballots." Under the proposed legislation, workers get to choose the union formation process—elections or majority sign-up. Under current law, the choice to recognize a union rests only with employers.

  4. In an ideal world, a secret ballot election might be an ideal way to determine employees’ choice regarding unionization. In the real world, the union election process has too often become anti-democratic.

    Employers’ power over employees and the workplace gives them overwhelming built-in advantages that no incumbent union has in a democratic political election. Employers bombard employees with anti-union propaganda in mandatory meetings, often one-on-one with employees’ own supervisors.

    The Employee Free Choice Act would help allow employees to gain the collective voice in the workplace that many say they want and need to bargain for decent wages and working conditions.

  5. like Kreaven said it doesn't abolish the rights to secret ballot and the workers who are unsure how to vote can choose to have a secret ballot if 1/3 are asking for it

  8. The secret ballot is positive because it provides secracy for those who feel as though they need it. It may have it's negative effects, but doesn't everything???

  10. You need to learn how to read Arab! Then again, that goes for most of you! The blog simply asks for you to advocate for "the secret ballot". This does not ask if it is proper or not, if it will still be accessible under the EFCA, or if the EFCA itself is beneficial. A New Hero & rpatin are the only ones that actually make sense (even if A New Hero didn't actually answer it either)

  12. b/c it allows for a system of checks and balances that will allow the employee to make a decision on their own, instead of listening to the propaganda from both the pro-union employees and the company.

  13. Recently, the Democrats in the Florida House of Representatives elected their party leader using a secret ballot process. If choosing their workplace leader by secret ballot is good enough for Democratic politicians in Tallahassee, then guaranteeing the right to secret ballot elections should be the right thing to do for the workers of our state.

    Electing those who represent us at work is just as important as electing those who represent us in government.

    Voters cast their votes free from fear of retribution from their government, and they deserve the same right to be free of fear of retaliation from their union, their employer and their fellow employees.

  14. The last sentence from ttribc is good. The rest is useless/pointless. Just because Tallahassee does something in its governmental system, doesn't mean it warrants doing it EVERYWEHRE or for EVERYTHING! Fail.

  15. Former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey, a potential U.S. Senate candidate, and other advocates of free markets rallied for keeping secret ballots in unionization elections yesterday at the Doubletree Guest Suites Philadelphia West.

    The legislation the attendees oppose, known as card check, would diminish the ability of private-sector workers to decide by secret ballot whether or not they want to unionize. It would also require binding arbitration for any company that cannot reach a contractual agreement with its workers’ union four months after the workers opted for the union.Under current law, 30 percent of a company’s staff must sign unionization cards in order to call for an election. If over 50 percent of the staff sign the cards, management can agree voluntarily to recognize the union. Card check would make recognition mandatory.
    Mr. Phillips also noted that union leaders get elected to their posts by secret ballot.

    “If the secret ballot is good enough for a union boss, isn’t the secret ballot good enough for the American worker?” he said.

  18. I agree with ARAB using secret ballots can vote on your union and not have to worry about what everybody thinks about you or your decision because it's secret

    this week i cant do it Tuesday, i can do it any time Wed. i cant't do it thursday

    Next week i can do it Tuesday Wednesdya nd Friday

    Until May 2nd i'm limited on Days because i have drama after school most days.

  19. the secret ballot allows individuals to join a union without the cohesive actions that were more present in the past.
